Brick as a Language: Material, Light, and Identity in the Projects of And Studio Architects

There are materials that stand the test of time without losing their expressive power. Brick is one of them. From an essential building element, it has evolved over the course of history into a true architectural language, capable of defining the character, proportions, and atmosphere of buildings. Its expressive richness lies precisely in its simplicity: a continuous surface can be transformed through the way it is laid, the play of light, and the pattern of the masonry.

For AND Studio, brick is not merely an aesthetic choice but a design material. Every project stems from the search for a balance between contemporary design, tradition, and construction quality, using brick as an element capable of engaging with the landscape and light.

The Material That Shapes Architecture

In the design for new residences in Perignano, brick completely covers the building’s volume, transforming it into a compact, monolithic mass. The deeply recessed openings appear to be carved into the masonry, while the rigorous design of the facade allows the texture to define the character of the architecture. Natural light flows across the surface during the day, highlighting the nuances of the brick and the precision of its texture.

When the Wall Becomes a Filter

In the design of the private villa in San Miniato, brick takes on a different function. The wall loses its nature as a closed element and becomes a permeable surface. Through an irregular weave—created by alternating solid and open sections—the wall filters light, protects privacy, and promotes natural ventilation.

It is a contemporary interpretation of an ancient principle: using materials not only to define space but also to regulate the relationship between interior and exterior. The changing light throughout the day continuously transforms the perception of the wall, making the facade dynamic and vibrant.

A Timeless Material

Brick possesses a rare quality: it ages with dignity. Its imperfections, color variations, and surface texture all contribute to creating buildings that gain character as the years go by. It is a material capable of harmonizing with the landscape, highlighting architectural details, and conveying a strong sense of authenticity.

In AND Studio’s projects, brick is never merely a cladding material, but an integral part of the architectural concept. Every pattern, every joint, and every variation in the laying pattern is designed to transform a surface into an element capable of interacting with light, defining space, and conveying the project’s identity.

Because brick, even before it is a material, is a way of constructing architecture through the material itself.
