Revitalizing Historic Heritage: Foggia’s Former Military District Becomes a University Residence Hall
How to transform a historic building into a place capable of accommodating new forms of life, study, and social interaction? The project for the recovery of a portion of the former Military District of Foggia arises from this question and proposes a vision that goes beyond mere building redevelopment.
The intervention involves converting the complex into a modern university residence while preserving the historical and architectural values of the building. The goal is not only to recover an existing heritage but also to return to the city an active, open space capable of generating new urban relationships.
The design strategy is based on the reuse of existing elements and the enhancement of their original characteristics. Historical elements are preserved and reinterpreted, while new interventions are integrated in a discreet and recognizable manner, establishing a balanced dialogue between memory and contemporaneity.
One of the most significant aspects concerns the relationship with the city. The removal of part of the fences along Via Fuiani allows for the creation of a new covered public square that becomes a meeting place and provides access to the various functions present within the complex. The building, transitioning from a closed and introverted space, opens up to the neighborhood, increasing urban permeability and fostering new connections with the surrounding context.
The internal organization clearly distinguishes between collective and private spaces. On the ground floor, cultural, educational, and shared functions are located, closely connected to the central courtyard and open areas. In contrast, the upper levels are dedicated to residences, which are designed in various types to meet the needs of students with different habits and requirements. Rooms, living units, and mini-apartments coexist in a system that promotes both privacy and community life.
Great attention has also been dedicated to sustainability. The project includes the recovery of rainwater, the use of photovoltaic panels integrated into the new canopies, and the improvement of energy performance through insulation systems compatible with the historical value of the building. Advanced technological solutions and targeted structural interventions also allow for increased safety, efficiency, and comfort without altering the identity of the complex.
The result is a project that interprets urban regeneration as an opportunity to build new communities, restoring the historical heritage to a central role in the contemporary life of the city.
