Texture e pattern

In the work of AND Studio Architects, texture and pattern are not merely decorative elements, but rather design tools capable of shaping identity, light, materiality, and the relationship with the surrounding context. Each surface is conceived as an architectural device capable of transforming the perception of space and defining the character of the building through the interplay of solids and voids, transparency, shadows, and depth.

In the design of the bank in Bientina, the focus is on Corten steel, used as a living, ever-changing material. The metal’s natural oxidation creates a textured surface that evolves over time, reflecting light, rain, and weathering. The pattern emerges from the modularity of the panels and the material’s chromatic variations, transforming the façade into a vibrant, rich surface.

Corten steel lends the building an institutional yet contemporary character, where the material reflects the passage of time and establishes a dialogue with the area’s industrial and manufacturing context.

In this private villa in San Miniato, the design stems from a reflection on materials and the architectural heritage of Tuscany. Brick is reinterpreted as a contemporary element through a porous, irregular composition that filters light and creates varying degrees of visual permeability.

The wall pattern is never static: the openings within the fabric create play of light, shifting shadows, and a sense of continuity between architecture and landscape. The wall thus becomes a filter for both climate and perception, capable of interacting with the surrounding greenery and the domestic dimension of living.

This research takes on a new dimension in the Nuova Sartoria Giuntini S.p.A. – Florence Group project in Peccioli, where the façade is conceived as a true architectural fabric. Through a parametric process, AND Studio has created a perforated prefabricated panel that interprets the theme of the warp and weft typical of tailoring.

The pseudo-organic perforations filter natural light and transform the upper volume into a white mass suspended above the transparency of the lower levels.

During the day, the pattern creates depth and a play of light; in the evening, the building transforms into a large urban lantern, making the façade a symbolic and communicative element linked to the company’s industrial identity.

At Palazzo San Jacopo in Lucca, the theme of pattern is translated into a system of architectural brise-soleils that redefine the relationship between interior and exterior. The vertical elements create a new spatial depth and regulate natural light within the courtyard. The filter becomes an integral part of the architectural experience: not merely a technical screen, but an atmospheric element capable of generating rhythm, shadow, and a dynamic perception of space. Light passes through the system, creating a shifting sequence of transparency and density, transforming the architecture into an organism sensitive to the variations of the day.

Through these projects, AND Studio pursues a consistent exploration of the theme of the surface as an active element of architecture: a skin capable of uniting technique, material, identity, and light into a single contemporary language.
